Glasgow Barr & Family Glasgow Barr was found in the 1870 and 1880 Abbeville County, South Carolina census. William Barr, Jr. did not take Glasgow to Pontotoc County, Mississippi. It is believed that he sold Glasgow to the Lesley Family, who lived near the Barrs, enabling Glasgow to not be separated from his wife, Rosa, and children. It is possible that William Barr, Jr. swapped Glasgow for Jacob, Sue's husband, to keep these two family units in tact. After slavery, Glasgow retained the Barr surname like his brother, Pleasant. The census indicates that he had at least three sons, George Barr and Oliver Barr, who remained in Abbeville, and another son named Glasgow Wilson, who migrated with Pleasant's son Bill Reed to near Senatobia, Mississippi in 1866. Glasgow Jr. took the Wilson surname because the Lesleys had sold him to John R. Wilson, who was married to Rebecca Barr's niece, Mary Reid Wilson. Bill Reed and Glasgow Wilson were living together in 1870, per the 1870 Panola County, Mississippi census. Glasgow Barr's family was also found in the 1900 Abbeville, South Carolina census, but after that, they disappeared. It is not known what became of Glasgow Barr's family. Sawney Barr & Family William Barr, Jr. took Sawney with him and others to Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1859. After slavery, Sawney remained in Pontotoc County. According to "From These Hill, A History of Pontotoc County," Sawney Barr became the first black Superintendent of Schools for Pontotoc County during the Reconstruction era. Mr. Walter Bates of Pontotoc, MS, a local black historian, recalls his grandmother talking about Fanny Barr. Therefore, it appears that Grandma Fanny Barr lived into the 1890's. Mr. Bates also confirmed that Sawney Barr was a son of Grandma Fanny. If you are a descendant of Sawney Barr, please contact us.
Elijah Barr & Family After slavery, Pleasant Barr remained in Ripley, Mississippi, remarried to Amanda Young, and had Elijah Barr, who was born in 1867. Elijah moved to Memphis, Tennessee by 1900. According to the census, Elijah Barr married twice. His first wife is unknown, and it is unknown if he had children with his first wife. However, in 1907, he remarried to Mrs. Lula Rayford, the widow of Phillip Rayford. With Lula, Elijah Barr had two children, Francis & James Barr. Elijah Barr died in Memphis in 1918. After his death, Lula and her children moved to Chicago, Illinois, where they lived on Federal Street in 1920 and 1930. If you are a descendant of Elijah Barr, please contact us.
